Providence Farms LLC was established in 2016 with the firm belief that everything that happens is due to the providence of God, and there is no need to worry. Our farm is located in southeastern Colorado, near Towner, and all of our acres are dryland, meaning that we rely entirely on the moisture that falls from the sky. However, farming in a semi-arid environment poses significant challenges, including drought, soil erosion, and limited water resources.
Our area receives an average of 16 inches of rainfall each year, with some years being much drier and others being wetter. Regardless of how much rain we receive, we strive to make the most of every drop and not let it go to waste. Our no-till farming practices play a crucial role in conserving soil moisture and preventing erosion, but we still face many challenges.
Drought is perhaps the most significant challenge we face, as it can lead to reduced yields and crop failures. In times of drought, we rely on careful management of our limited water resources, including strategic irrigation and soil moisture monitoring. Soil erosion is another major challenge, as the dry and often windy conditions in our area can cause topsoil to be blown away, reducing fertility and degrading the land.
Despite these challenges, we remain committed to sustainable farming practices that prioritize conservation and stewardship of the land. We grow a variety of crops, including hard red winter wheat, corn, milo (grain sorghum), and proso millet, and we may also plant sunflowers in some years if conditions are right. Every year brings its own set of challenges, but we remain focused on our faith and trust that if we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and not the problem, the problems will resolve themselves without the need for sleepless nights.
